Côte Saint-Luc receives grants to build new aquatic centre and intergenerational centre

The governments of Canada and Quebec announced at a news conference at city hall on February 19, 2010, that they were giving the City of Côte Saint-Luc grants totalling $11.57 million to pay for two-thirds of a new building to house an aquatic centre and intergenerational centre.

Canadian Senator Judith Seidman, Quebec Minister of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy, Laurent Lessard, the Member for D'Arcy McGee and Chair of the Government Caucus, Lawrence Bergman, and Mayor Anthony Housefather addressed the media.

This grant of $11.57 million will allow Côte Saint-Luc to build a world-class building, which will provide Côte Saint-Luc with an outstanding facility for swimming all year round. It will provide our clubs and associations, such as the seniors clubs, with modern facilities and sufficient space to accommodate hundreds of members. Côte Saint-Luc will also launch new programs to bring together young people and seniors to address social concerns and to create opportunities for lifelong civic engagement. This is the intergenerational aspect of the project.

The city must now invite companies to bid on the project, create architectural plans, and begin the project. The city will break ground this summer and the building should be complete in 2011.

Winter Carnival 2010 video highlights

Watch video highlights from the 2010 Côte Saint-Luc Winter Carnival, which took place on Sunday, February 14, 2010.

Christmas tree disposal

Côte St. Luc Christmas tree collection Residents in single-family houses and duplexes should put  their Christmas trees at the curb on the day of their regular brown bin (organics) collection.

Residents in multi-family dwellings (including townhouses) should put their Christmas trees at the curb on the day of the brown bin (organics) collection in their area--even if their building doesn't yet have brown bin (organics) collection.

How to place the blue bin for collection

Place your blue bin at the edge of your driveway (but not on the street or sidewalk) with the logo facing the street and the wheels facing the home—just like your brown bin. Leave at least 2 feet (0.6 meters) on either side of the blue bin, which is needed for the mechanical arm to safely lift your blue bin. Make sure nothing else on your driveway is in the way. Finally, ensure that nothing is covering the lid.

During the winter months, ensure that your blue bin is not on the sidewalk, as this will impede snow clearing operations. Also, please ensure that your snow removal contractor does not accidentally knock over or move your blue bin from the correct position at the edge of your driveway.

Snow clearing and removal

Cote Saint-Luc snow clearingThe City of Côte Saint-Luc has rules to ensure that snow removal is done in a safe, timely and effective way. Residents are called upon to do their part to help make their roads safe this winter.

Once precipitation has stopped, the accumulated snow along the edge of these roadways is removed by our snow-blowing equipment.

Temporary no parking signs
The City of Côte Saint-Luc puts temporary no parking signs on many streets before our snow clearing operation. The goal is to prevent delays in snow clearing caused by vehicles parked on city streets.

Towing
If you see a temporary no parking sign near your parked vehicle, please move your vehicle. If you don't, your vehicle may be towed to an adjacent street and you will be fined $97. If your vehicle is towed, you can call 514-485-6960 to find out where it was moved.

Parking alternatives
If you see temporary no parking signs on your street, you might want to consider parking your car overnight at a nearby city parking lot. Call Côte Saint-Luc Public Security at 514-485-6960 to find the parking lot closest to your home. (Note: City parking lots may not be used overnight in normal times.

We also encourage residents to use all available parking spaces on their driveway or in their garage at all times--especially during and after a heavy snowfall.

Toboggan hill and free hot chocolate

Residents are invited use to the toboggan hill at Pierre Elliott Trudeau Park Saturdays and Sundays between noon and 10:30pm. Côte Saint-Luc provides music and hot chocolate from noon to 5pm. Call 514-485-6824 to confirm the hill is open. The season runs until the end of February.

Tobogganing Rules

  1. Inspect your toboggan to ensure it is in good condition. Use only proper sliding equipment that has good brakes and steering (metal runners and a steering arm). Inner tubes, plastic disks or other makeshift toboggans (like a piece of cardboard) aren’t recommended as they are difficult to control. Ensure there are no jagged edges, splinters or protruding parts on your tobogganing equipment.
  2. Ensure that there is plenty of room to stop at the bottom of the hill.
  3. Toboggan with a friend.
  4. Toboggan in daylight and only on well-lit hills at night.
  5. Children under 12 should be supervised by an adult. Children under 5 should have an adult on the toboggan with them.
  6. Protect your head with a CSA-approved helmet.
  7. Avoid sliding on your stomach, headfirst, lying on your back or standing up.
  8. Hold on to ropes or handles. Keep you hands and feet tucked in, away from the edges.
  9. Don’t overload the toboggan
  10. Wait at the top of the hill until others have moved out of your way.
  11. If you fall off part way down the hill and are not hurt, move out of the way as quick as you can. Look back to see if anyone is headed toward you, then head to the side of the hill and walk back up.
  12. After reaching the bottom of the hill, head back well away from the run to avoid oncoming toboggans.
  13. Many tobogganing injuries are actually cold-related, such as frostbite or hypothermia. Dress warmly and in layers. Make sure you have a hat and a neck warmer. Scarves and clothing with drawstrings should not be worn. Choose mitts and clothing that “shed” snow. It is not recommended to toboggan in temperatures below minus 19 degrees Celsius. Take into consideration the wind chill factor when sledding.

Frost bite
If your child’s face has white patches, or the face, ears, hands or feet become a reddish-violet colour, itchy, chapped, or painful, it is time to go inside. Once inside, put your child in warm clothes and give them something warm to drink. Warm the area by using a blanket or place the area against a part of your body. Do not rub or run hot water over the area. If the area turns black or numbness does not subside, consult your doctor.
