Côte Saint-Luc Day at Montreal Juniors game launches Winter Carnival Month

Côte Saint-Luc, January 23, 2009–Côte Saint-Luc minor hockey association players can put on their jerseys to get into the Verdun Auditorium for free on February 2 and watch a Montreal Juniors hockey game—the event that launches Winter Carnival Month in Côte Saint-Luc.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with the Montreal Juniors to hold Côte Saint-Luc Day on February 2,” Mayor Anthony Housefather said. “All of the members of the city council, our staff, our minor hockey association and most importantly our hockey players are extremely excited about being part of this event.”

Children who currently play in the Côte Saint-Luc minor hockey program and attend the game with their team jersey can enter the Verdun Auditorium (4110 LaSalle Blvd.) for free. Parents or non-players should visit the pro-shop at the Samuel Moskovitch Arena (6985 Mackle Rd.) to buy tickets. The pro-shop is open most evenings and weekends. The cost of a ticket is $17.

The 2009 Côte Saint-Luc Winter Carnival Month includes activities from February 2 to February 14. In addition to the Montreal Juniors hockey game, there will be free public skating at the Samuel Moskovitch Arena on February 7 at 8pm. On February 8 throughout the day, there will be taffy-on-snow, inflatable games, horse-drawn carriages and much more at Pierre Elliott Trudeau Park. Finally, there will be a 1950s-style sock-hop dance at the Côte Saint-Luc Gymnasium on February 14 at 8pm. Limited space is available for dance and tickets are on sale at the Parks and Recreation Department Building (7500 Mackle Rd.) weekdays between 8:30am and 4:30pm or at the Samuel Moskovitch Arena office weekdays between 9am and 5pm (the office is closed for lunch between 12:30pm and 1:30pm). A ticket costs $14.

“The city council proclaimed February as Winter Carnival Month to highlight the fact there are more events than ever throughout the month,” said Councillor Mitchell Brownstein, who is a co-chairperson of the Winter Carnival. “I am especially happy that we have partnered with Montreal Juniors to let our own young hockey players watch one of their games for free.”

A full list of Winter Carnival Month events is posted in municipal buildings and is available at CoteSaintLuc.org.

“Believe it or not, I was a bit too young to attend sock-hops in the 1950s or early 1960s, but I plan on attending the one of February 14, but I plan to wear comfortable shoes I do not dance well in socks,” said Councillor Allan J. Levine, who is also a co-chairperson of the Winter Carnival. “People are going to think they have gone back in time when they arrive at the gymnasium. We welcome baby boomers from all communities to join us to celebrate both this dance and all the events.”

Many Winter Carnival activities are offered free of charge. Donations will be accepted for Le Manoir Ronald McDonald de Montréal throughout the event. Community partners and patrons raised $3,000 for this charity in 2008. The Manoir offers an affordable and comforting home away from home for families who have a child hospitalized for a serious sickness in a Montreal hospital. Information is available about the Manoir at www.rmhc.ca. Residents can learn more about Winter Carnival by calling 514-485-6806 or visiting www.CoteSaintLuc.org to view a complete line-up of the event.
