Dispose of hazardous waste the safe way on Sunday, August 22 in Côte Saint-Luc

Côte Saint-Luc, August 16, 2010 – The annual household hazardous waste (HHW) collection takes place in the City of Côte Saint-Luc on Sunday, August 22 from 9am to 5pm beside the Public Works Department Building at 7001 Mackle Rd.

Common HHW items include fluorescent light bulbs (including compact florescent lights), batteries, paints and solvents, pesticides, cleaning products, aerosol cans, motor oil, gasoline, expired medication, thermometers, used computers and electronic equipment, and empty propane tanks.

At last year’s event, Côte Saint-Luc collected a record 25 tonnes of HHW, which was almost double the amount collected the previous year.

“This annual event is a way for residents to dispose of hazardous waste in a responsible way,” said Councillor Dida Berku, the council member responsible for environmental issues. “Many people don’t realize how many materials around their house and garage are dangerous. Many of these corrosive materials can represent a threat to garbage collection crews if thrown in the garbage.”

Residents should not mix or pour different or unknown materials together in the same container. Please follow any instructions for use and disposal provided on product labels, and when possible, bring items tightly sealed in original containers without removing the labels. Place any container that cannot be tightly closed in a sealed plastic bag.

If you cannot attend this HHW collection day, you can drop off hazardous waste at any Eco-centre on the island of Montreal. The nearest Eco-centre is at 6925 Côte-des-Neiges Rd., next to the Maxi supermarket. For hours of operation, call 514-872-3517.

Residents can also dispose of regular batteries, rechargeable batteries, and used cell phones at the Public Works Department Building (7001 Mackle Rd.), Monday to Thursday from 8am to 3pm, and Friday from 8am to 11:30am. Visit www.ecoCSL.org for more information.
