Côte Saint-Luc helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions through city-wide organic waste collection program

Côte Saint-Luc, January 19, 2009 – In the first 12 weeks of organic waste collection in Côte Saint-Luc, the city has collected 215 tonnes (472,000 pounds) of kitchen and garden waste—which is more than the weight of a Boeing 747 aircraft.

“We have surpassed our goal for the amount of waste being diverted to compost facilities,” Mayor Anthony Housefather said. “Our residents have demonstrated that people on the island of Montreal are ready to make a small change in how they dispose of household waste.”

Côte Saint-Luc adopts its 2009 budgets

Côte Saint-Luc, December 16, 2008 – The Côte Saint-Luc city council last evening adopted the City of Cote Saint-Luc operating budget for the 2009 fiscal year. The 2009 operating budget amounts to 54 million dollars and reflects a tax increase of 1.9 percent for a property that increased an average 36 percent as a result of the implementation of the 2007-2010 valuation assessment roll. The increase of 1.9 percent is less than the rate of inflation.

Expanded community outreach program brings the library to homes and seniors residences in Côte Saint-Luc

Côte Saint-Luc, December 2, 2008 – If you cannot come to the Eleanor London Côte Saint-Luc Public Library, the library will come to you thanks to an expanded community outreach program and more than 75 active volunteers.

“We have as one of our missions to go outside library walls to where the people are,” said Tanya Abramovitch, Director of the library. “We want to be active players in Côte Saint-Luc, and empower residents to make a difference in other people’s lives.”

Côte Saint-Luc, November 12, 2008 – In celebration of Jewish Book Month, acclaimed authors Ami Sands Brodoff and Gina Roitman will be speaking on Thursday, December 4 at 7pm at the Eleanor London Côte Saint-Luc Public Library.

Ami Sands Brodoff’s book The White Space Between is a family's story of the Holocaust.  It is a story which lies buried in the soil of a graveyard in Prague, in the old neighborhoods of Montréal, in the serenity of a small New Jersey town, and in the memory of a mother.   

Côte Saint-Luc EMS volunteers honoured for long service

Côte Saint-Luc, November 6, 2008 – Mayor Anthony Housefather and the Côte Saint-Luc municipal council will honour 32 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) volunteers for their contribution to Côte Saint-Luc’s first responder service, Monday November 10, 2008 at 8pm at City Hall (5801 Cavendish Blvd.).

“Our EMS volunteers provide outstanding care to those in medical distress in Côte Saint-Luc,” Mayor Anthony Housefather said. “We are very proud to honour and thank them for their important contribution to our community.”

Residents of Smart Ave. and Baily win grand prize at annual Maisons Fleuries home garden contest

Côte Saint-Luc, November 4, 2008 – Côte Saint-Luc announced the winners and runners up in the 2008 Maisons Fleuries home garden contest yesterday evening at 7:30pm at the Bernard Lang Civic Centre.

The grand prize winner in the category of single-family homes or semi-detached homes was the Giordano family of Smart Ave. The grand prize winner in the duplex category was Remo D’Alesio of Baily Rd.

Ensemble Caprice will perform in Côte Saint-Luc on Sunday, November 9, 2008

Côte Saint-Luc, November 3, 2008 – The musical group Ensemble Caprice will perform a concert entitled Vivaldi and the Gypsies on Sunday, November 9 at 2pm at the Eleanor London Côte Saint-Luc Public Library.  

The concert is presented by the Montreal Arts Council, the City of Côte Saint-Luc and the Eleanor London Côte Saint-Luc Public Library.

The concert focuses on a unique, anonymous collection of early Gypsy (or Roma) music (circa 1730) from eastern Europe and works by composer Antonio Vivaldi.

Home security information session in Côte Saint-Luc on October 28

Côte Saint-Luc, October 20, 2008 – André Belotte of Neighbourhood Police Station 9 will provide security tips for residents at the Home Security for Snowbirds information session on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 10am at the Bernard Lang Civic Centre (5801 Cavendish Blvd.).

Organized by the City of Côte Saint-Luc and the Montreal police department, this annual event is designed to help residents make their homes more secure—especially those who fly south for several months of the year.

City-wide organic waste collection begins on Monday in Côte Saint-Luc

Côte Saint-Luc, October 17, 2008 – Starting Monday, October 20 at 8am, Côte Saint-Luc will begin collecting kitchen and garden waste from brown bins as the city expands its curbside organic waste collection—sometimes called compost collection— to nearly 5,000 single-family homes and duplexes.

In September 2007, Côte Saint-Luc began collecting organic waste from 500 homes as part of a pilot project to help divert waste from landfill. The program was a success and Côte Saint-Luc is now expanding it.

Roadwork at Cavendish/Fleet intersection starts October 20

Côte Saint-Luc, October 14, 2008 – The City of Côte Saint-Luc will begin major roadwork on southbound Cavendish Blvd. near Fleet Rd. on October 20, as part of a road reconfiguration project that will include the addition of a second left-turning lane.

All-night Read-A-Thon in Côte Saint-Luc to raise money for Comfy Cozy Fund

Côte Saint-Luc, October 10, 2008 – Kids, parents and library staff will be staying up late on Saturday, October 25 to read and raise money at the first ever all-night Read-A-Thon at the Eleanor London Côte Saint-Luc Public Library.

Côte Saint-Luc to host third open house on October 16 to explain organic waste collection program to residents

Côte Saint-Luc, October 8, 2008 – Residents will be able to ask questions about the upcoming organic waste collection program at the third and final open house at the Bernard Lang Civic Centre (5801 Cavendish Blvd.) on Thursday, October 16 at 7pm.

The City of Côte Saint-Luc delivered the new 240 litre brown bins to 4,798 single-family homes and duplexes in late September. Residents will use their bins to dispose of their garden waste and kitchen waste. The city will collect the contents of the brown bins each week.

Pamela Grimaud to lecture on fashions of the 1940s in Côte Saint-Luc

Côte Saint-Luc, September 17, 2008 – Costume specialist Pamela Grimaud will be discussing fashions of the1940s on Tuesday, September 23 at 2pm at the Eleanor London Côte Saint-Luc Public Library.

Grimaud says that the1940s remains one of the most vibrant and innovative periods in twentieth century fashion.
